Stepping Over

In one of the past class discussions on Crime and Punishment, we discussed the fact that "extraordinary" people are willing and capable of stepping over the line. For Raskolnikov, that line was the blood of the pawnbroker and her sister. He finds, much to his dismay, that he was unable to step over. However, I think a lesson can be learned from Raskolnikov and his failure.
Every man has to "step over" something in his life in order to see his true self and be able to come to God. For a person to be able to see his need for a relationship with God, he must step over himself and his selfish wants and desires. Sometimes, like in Raskolnikov's case, people fail, but it is not a final damnation. God is a loving and forgiving God who wants his children to come to him despite their conditions. He doesn't expect sinners to be perfect because it is impossible. Instead he expects them to come as ordinary people who are unable to step over that line in their lives, whether it be addictions, lack of trust, or just reluctance. In return He will meet them and through His power help them step over those lines turning them into extraordinary people for Him.
