Is Prostitution a Sin?

I firmly believe that prostitution is a sin in every circumstance. Yes, there are situations where prostitution is understandable, but I do not think we should justify the sin just because the person has a good reason.

Sonya, from Crime and Punishment, had a very good reason for her prostitution; she needed to support herself and her children. Her decision to resort to prostitution, although it was for unselfish reasons, is still a sin. Even though she did not lust during her prostitution, she is defiling her body. She is having sex with many different men, all of whom she is not married to. She is being sexually immoral, and therefore, sinning.

1 Corinthians 7:2 says, "But there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband." [Notice the singularity. Meaning we should have a monogamous relationship.] In 1 Corinthians, Paul is basically saying that marriage is the "cure" for sexual immorality.

Hebrews 13:4 says, "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral."

Svid is being both adulterous and sexually immoral by having relations with his "mistresses" in wedlock, even though his wife consented. By consenting, his wife is pretty much giving her husband permission to sin.

So my answer is yes, prostitution is most definitely a sin under every circumstance. And we need to stop trying to justify our sins with our motives behind it. There is no sin that is greater than another. Lying and sexual immorality are the same in God's eyes. Sin is sin.

  1. Thank you. I agree whole-heartedly with all you have said here, and the evidence is in the Book itself. But you've created a problem for me here...

... I just got on here to make a blog about this very subject. You've ruined my plan. XD
