The right to live? I think not.
This is going to be a short blog, because I don't have much to say, but something struck me in class the other day. A question came up about life. "Is life a right?" Of course coming from a Christian perspective, we talk some. Most everyone says, "Well, yes. We are told not to murder, so we have the right to live." But I want to approach this from a solely Christian perspective. We do not control our own lives. Until we are saved, we may think we do, but then we realize that we do not. God creates life in us, and sustains it. When we become a Christian, we give our life back to God from the rebellion we were in. We give up any "right" to life we think we may have had. Looking even further, our life is but a privilege. We didn't have to exist at all, but we were created. We rebelled, deserving death, but God let us live. This is the simplest way to explain my thought process: when we deserve one thing, but get another, that other thing is not a right. It is a privilege. We deserve death, but receive life. Life is in no way a right. Life is a God-given privilege that He may take at any time. Let us not be so arrogant as to claim we have any such "right" to life.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very good point. It goes to back to the conversations that we had the other night after watching the video about Humanistic Christianity. Most of today's "Christians" Are unknowingly humanists. They see everything that Christ has done as something that He has done for THEM. When, in truth, all that He does is for HIS glory! Now, don't get me wrong....God is crazy in love with us. He DOES do things for us....but in doing those things, He glorifys himself. Yet we believe that our happiness is the main purpose for all that He does. When in truth, our happiness is just a biproduct.
ReplyDeleteSeth I am so glad that you wrote this blog because I've never really thought about it just like that! I agree with you entirely! Our lives are precious gifts that none of us deserve to have! I'm so thankful God loves us so much that He gives us the gift of eternal life, and it's not something we have to work towards, it's a free gift. OUr God is so amazing and yet our minds lead us to believe that it is our right to live, when it is not. it is a wonderful privilege just like you said.
ReplyDeleteI really like the phrasing in this. I've never thought of it this way and you've managed to make a statement that could be considered very controversial seem basic and true.
