Self-Evidence

The Natural Rights are called self-evident. However, we had trouble in class coming up with what that innate knowledge that we should have is. It was agreed that everyone wants life, liberty, and happiness but just wanting can't be enough to claim a right to something. Can it?

The act of wanting implies a decision, if only a mental one. Let's say you wanted a cookie before dinner. You've already come to the conclusion that you want to eat that cookie, even if your parents stop you from getting it. Despite not getting the cookie, consciously deciding that you want a cookie is different form just being hungry. Being hungry is involuntarily like breathing or your heart beating; however, deciding what you want to eat requires thought.

I personally believe that thought is a form of freedom. While your thoughts can be influenced, they are still ultimately yours. That can't be taken away; no matter what continent, time period, or social position you are in. Everyone thinks; everyone has that little piece of freedom inside their own minds.
