For the Good of Society

In reading this weeks homework, John Mill's "On Liberty," I came across a statement that stood out to me:

"Every one who receives the protection of society owes a return for the benefit, and the fact of living in society renders it indispensable that each should be bound to observe a certain line of conduct towards the rest."

What are some of the benefits of soceity? A few include: entertainment, jobs, consumer opportunities, recreational activities, and protection. According to Mill, in order to enjoy these benefits, and because we enjoy these benefits, we are bound to return something to society.

We can benefit society in many ways, big and small. You can coach an inner-city or recreational league baseball team, you can pick up trash off the side of the highway, you can volunteer at a museum or festival, you can help build houses for those in need, you can be active in politics, or you can go so far as to dedicate your life to protecting our country in one of the branches of the military. All of these are among many necessary and vital jobs.

My question for you is, what are you doing to benefit society?
