Poetry kills....

Poetry kills me, it really does. At least it did. Before this class, i had heard a few poems and we would read them in class in like 5th grade; and I always thought they were rediculous. I mean, there are poems for everything. Even urns have their place. And I could never understand why in the heck someone would sit down and write a poem. Is it that they had too much time on their hands? Were they sane? What made them want to write this junk? And so, of course, some of the first poems we read in class are absolutely awful at first glance, but then, after carefully disecting each line, you start to see a hidden meaning, a moral, something more beneath it all. Maybe thats why im starting to like it. I love deep stuff. And poetry, when it can be decifered, is an amazing thing. So maybe one day I will go get high on moth balls or Opium and it will get the creative juices flowing. I mean, look what it did for Coleridge.....and the Beatles.....

  1. You're right, the best part of poetry is finding out what every line means. The deep part is what poetry is all about, the part that touches each and every one of us.

  2. Kyle I love this post and I'm in the same boat with you man. Poetry seems so pointless until you see the point. You know how a treasure map is complicated and sometimes misleading, poetry can sometimes seem like that. However, when you find the treasure you appreciate your journey and the prize you've found. It's a beautiful thing, the treasure of Poetry.

  3. I completely agree as well. I never understood poetry (too much "hidden meaning" for me haha) until i got into high school. I had the same English teacher for all 4 years in high school and she taught us HOW to understand it. I think once you have the ability to break down what the author is trying to say and discover the point he's trying to get across, that's when poetry gets interesting.

  4. I agree with the hidden messages beneath the lines, but I don't agree with you getting high on opium to write great poetry! lol
Once you understand the way poetry is written and you have the time to disect it, its amazing.

  5. Well...I agree as well. I really enjoyed the works we read this week (and I definitely didn't think I would at the start of it all). It's hard for me to dig into poetry and deeper works, but I can definitely thank this honors lit class for "making" me do it. woohoo. "/ In all seriousness, the poetry this week has taught me to give more of it a chance, and not just be done with it after reading through it once; usually the initial thoughts on a poem won't remain the same after a good pick through. :)

  6. I totally agree...that happened to me as well. Especially when I start reading and all of these words sound so unfamiliar, but then they start getting some type of sense!
