Should we own.... anything?

I was not in class on Thursday because of other commitments, but reading through the blogs, it seems as though land ownership was the big question of the day. I've read different qualifications that accompanied this big question, and I hope this one didn't come up and get resolved, but I have another one: should Christians own anything.. at all?
Living in America, it would be unthinkable to say no to this question. We like our stuff, and we will justify having it if it kills us. But let's forget what we've heard explained away for so many years now. Let's look at Scripture, shall we?
What should we look at?
Jesus says to sell all you have and give it to the poor to follow him. Obviously just meaning to be his disciple...
Jesus says to die to yourself and lose your life to gain it. Who knows what that means anyway...
Jesus says to literally leave your family for dead, to give up your love for them to come follow him. Once again, must have been for those specific people...
Jesus says do not worry about what to eat, drink, or wear. Not at all, don't concern yourself with it. Well, he didn't have a family...
Need I go on? Jesus doesn't play when it comes to following him. I've heard every single one of these explained away. But say they should be. Let's step away from Jesus, and take a look at the church.
"So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." Acts 3:41-47
"There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need." Acts 4:34-35
The early church sold what they owned. They shared everything. What does this sound like? Communism? It IS communism. The rich selling their stuff and giving to the needy. But it's voluntary communism, communism that actually worked. They were told to provide for themselves, so that they would not be dependent on anyone.
If you still don't think it was important, take for example Ananias. He sold his land as was instructed by the church, but he kept some of the money for himself. He and his wife were immediately killed. They were killed because they wanted to keep their stuff AND be a Christian. I hope this makes you think.

  1. Right on, Right on. Just wanted to throw the example out there of Francis Chan, author of "Crazy Love". Francis got to the point in his church where he became discontent with the way things were going. His church looked nothing like the early church, and he wasn't happy with it. So he left for a period of time, to get focused. On his returning, he called together the elders and leaders of the church, and read this passage, and they began to offer everything. They gave copies of there house keys and car keys to each other, access to bank accounts and sold their family's health insurance, and depended on each other to be their health insurance. They literally opened up EVERYTHING to each other. It's pretty crazy, but God's moving there.

  2. Amen.

JESUS said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. The camel thing is impossible, so if we take Him literally for what He said, it is impossible for us to own and get and become obsessed with our "stuff", our "riches," and enter GOD's Kingdom. That is the opposite of our society. If it's impossible for a materially rich person to truly surrender to the ownership of GOD and not of possessions, then I believe it is impossible for a government - a society - a nation to please the heart of GOD and impact eternity for the kindom of Heaven if we are consumed with making new ways to "posess." Rather, should we not obsess on how to give it all away to the greatest glory of GOD?
