Danger Signs

“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” -Genesis 2:9

Okay. So the Lord made the trees. And one of those trees contained the knowledge of good and evil. But he also placed a clear ‘danger sign’ on that tree with Genesis 2:17-“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

The Lord clearly states here to avoid that tree on penalty of death. It couldn’t have been much clearer if he had put it on a sign post in bright red letters for them to read every day. And yet, in the end, Adam and Eve ignored the Lord’s warning and ate of the tree anyway. There is lesson to be found here, and not just about good and evil.

Unlike Adam and Eve, the Lord did actually give us bright red letters(if you have that version) for us to read every day, containing the warnings of what we should and shouldn’t do. Our ‘danger sign’ is also known as the Bible.

We, like them, often ignore those bright red letters and go about things in our own way, thinking that we must know better than God. That maybe, doing it our way would be more beneficial to us than God’s way.

Unfortunately, we also share the same fate for disobedience as our predecessors. Death. Even though the end result was clearly labeled for Adam and Eve, they chose to follow their instincts and trust the word of the serpent over what had been told to them by God. The end result for us is also clearly labeled if we ignore God’s warnings.

The question I pose is this: Will we become like Adam and Eve, ignoring God’s warnings until it is too late, or will we heed those bright red letters and follow the path God has laid out for us?
