Owning Land?

As Dr. Biskner mentioned in class that certain cultures find the idea of owning the land crazy. I for one identify more with that mindset. I’ve never thought of the land itself as being owned by anyone: my house just happens to be on this plot, my grandmother just has access to the lake. The land is just being burrowed by or loaned to us. I believe I came to this conclusion for two reasons.

1) We pay taxes on any property we “own” annually. To keep the land you have to keep paying the government. Sort of like paying the rent. Politically the United States (or any other country) “owns” the land.

2) Ultimately the world is God’s. He created it, he keeps it going. He has given us dominion over the land. However, dominion does not equal ownership. It merely gives up use of the land. Because how can one creation own another; that’s sort of like saying my cell phone owns my laptop.

  1. I agree, I never thought about it before, but really the reason we pay to taxes to sort of keep up of our "borrowing" the land from the government. My grandaddy owns a lot of rural land with a pond on it and I always thought the taxes he had to pay on simple farmland and a small body of water was ridiculous. But this point helped me feel like the government isn't jipping my grandaddy so much :)
