Yesterday in class we talked about the French example about imposing taxes in order to help paying for the childcare. I believe this is a big dilemma and depending in the side where you are, you will see it in a whole different way. This is not a matter of right and wrong, but it will just depend in the reality that each of us have.
I don’t think a lot of people in our class have been able to see what I have seen. I am from a third world country where poverty is a big issue. More than half of the population of my country survives with less than a dollar per day. And, I am using the word survive, because these people are not really living, they are just trying to survive. Can you imagine what that means? It is very sad to see little kids asking for money in the streets and telling you “I am hungry”…”I haven’t eaten in a long time”. And then you just ask yourself: How can fathers or mothers let their kids be on the streets asking for money, when they can work and give their kids something to eat? Well. The answer is very simple, there are no jobs. And, just add one more thing, my country is called Colombia, and guerrilla is also a very big problem. Although this problem is reducing every day, it is something we can not deny. So, these people that have a farm and live perfectly in their house on the country side, have been displaced and forced to leave their houses in the country side to go to big cities, because if not, the guerrilla will kill them. So, what happens? There is overpopulation in cities, there are no jobs, our country is poor, and it doesn’t have the resources to help all these people.
So, going back to the question, I will really agree with imposing some taxes in order to help people that need it. I am not saying I will agree with communism or socialism because I totally disagree with them. I think that there must be a balance. We are a society and we should look for the common well before the individual one, even if it is hard. You can not imagine how just giving an insignificant amount of money for you; will change someone else’s life.

I completely agree; I've seen children like that. I've been on a few mission trips to Mexico and when we were crossing the border to get back to Texas, we saw these poor children begging for money and it broke my heart. I wanted more than anything to take them back with me and care for them. I know Mexico isn't as bad as Columbia, but something needs to be done. I resent the fact that there are people starving all over the world and in America we throw food away all the time.
ReplyDeleteI agree Camilla. Balance is crucial to most of what goes on in life and if we implement this into our daily lives and get the same ball rollin' in the minds of America, I believe it could be one of America's Greatest contributions throughout it's history.
ReplyDeleteCamila, this is a great post. Wow! This really made me stop and think, and I like that a lot. I always seem to find something to complain about. Your post makes me realize how incredibly selfish I can become when I don’t take time to be thankful for some of the freedoms I enjoy. These freedoms do not come without a cost, but the price I pay is so incredibly small compared to what other people have to give. Thanks for your contribution to this class and this blog!
