In class today, we discussed the inheritance tax places upon the French in order to pay for their childcare. First, I'm not sure we ever actually established that it is indeed the inheritance money that goes directly to the childcare but for argument's sake, I'll say it is. Yes, I do believe in giving of our time, money, and resources to help the less fortunate and goodness knows free childcare would do wonders for the working parents in America but at what cost? Did the parents of the inheriter (I'm not sure if that's the right word) work so hard all their lives to give their child a good life so that some modern day Robin Hood could come take it? I've made a Christian connection in all of my blogs so I'm going to make this one no exception.
We made the analogy of Robin Hood in class so I'll go with that. He's called the Prince of Thieves. Is that Biblical? Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't recall the commandment saying "Do not steal...unless it's from the rich to the less fortunate." I may be wrong but it just seems wrong to have a tax like that. Yes, a flat rate inheritance tax that was a certain percent would be all right. But Dr. Bissner said the more you get, the higher the rate. It seems like taking from people just because they worked for it.
Now, before I make myself sound like a super Republican who doesn't believe in helping people, let me say this. I believe we are commanded to give with a servant's heart. If not, are we not like the Pharisees? I doubt many people who are forced into giving are very loving about it. I know that this tax was placed with good intentions. It just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe there are things about it that I don't know but I just can't see Jesus doing that.

You are right, I think that taxes are ok and all, but ther needs to be a limit on how high we let them go. The Inherator owns that money, just because we can take it away doesn't mean that we should. But if we choose to, them we shouldn't take all of it away, or even too much of it. Everyone owes some taxes, but putting a high rate on someone just because they are more fortunate than someone else is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree, for them most part. If there has to be a tax I believe it should be a low percentile. The idea of taking money from people in their time of grief is pretty low in my opinion, I understand it benfits others who are still alive, but it still doesn't seem right.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Why should money be taken, in high percentages, from people who have, for the most part, worked hard to make that money and want to leave it as a legacy for their children. Taking money from the rich to give to the poor reminds me of the welfare system. So much money is taken from taxes and poured into making homes and providing for people who will not work to provide for themselves or their families. Granted there are always exceptions to the case. Some people are on welfare because they genuinely cannot work, some rich people did not work very hard to get their money, but I think these are more exceptions than the rule. Biblically we are called to give, and to do so generously. It would be great if the inheritors of great sums of money gave to those in need, but if they chose NOT to, should it be TAKEN from them anyway?...
