Last class we had a very interesting discussion about humans and their emotional and rational dimensions. Sincerely, I believe that neither the reason, nor the emotions are "bad", instead their conflict is the real substance of the human beings. That's just life... you always have to choose between two roads, and that is the good thing about it. That is what make people laugh but also suffer, think but also do nonsense things. What you will always be trying to do is achieve a balance between these dimensions.
Although humans belong to the animal kingdom, we are different because we don't behave according to our instincts. We are not machines either, that will just follow an internal chip. We are humans and we do not have anything set to follow, each of us makes our decisions according to what our unique reconciliation between our emotions and reason dictate. And that is what makes people different. All machines will solve a problem by the same way, so do animals, but not humans. Each of us will solve a problem by different ways.
For concluding my post I am just thinking that emotions and reason reassemble our legs. We need both of them to walk straight, and walking is just maintaining a balance between our two legs!

Agreed.
ReplyDeleteWe all subconciously strive to maintain some degree of balance between emotions and logic (those sane, at least). There are plenty who try and choose to dedicate themselves entirely to just thought (big-thinkers and those who play numb) or just feeling (a good few who label themselves 'emo' these days), but as stated in class, "we are all human," and we will always be affected by both the mind and the soul -- the 'heart' as the classic terminology goes, which altogether makes up our human nature.
But honestly, wouldn't it be nice to go at least one day with no thought, and another with no feeling? Just for the experience? Just a little additive to this comment... XD
I agree! You can't go without one or the other and still function well in society. A person without reason would simply act on all emotions and, as we saw with the Yahoos, would act animalistic and barbaric. On the other hand, a person with no emotions would have a very sad life with no happiness or love. I suppose you could argue they would not have sadness either but I do not believe a life can be complete without love of some sort, for someone.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great blog!! I love the leg reference!!
