Poverty

This may or may not have a lot to do with this book.

I think one of the main themes throughout Crime and Punishment is the idea of poverty and it's affects on people. One of the reasons Raskolnikov kills the pawnbroker is the motivation of money. Last week, I attended Mars Hill service at night and they were talking about Genesis 14 and how the city of Sodom wasn't neccessarilly destroyed because of the immorality but because of the lack of concern for the poor and for other people. This lack of caring and concern in turn led to all of the other problems that ended the city of Sodom. I think that is what is happening in America right now, and you can also see it through this book. Maybe if these people who are poverty stricken in Crime and Punishment were cared for earlier in life, these events may not have happened.
